KURANG setahun beroperasi dan bersaing dengan restoran ternama lain di kota New York, Amerika Syarikat (AS), restoran Mamak Malaysia mencipta nama apabila menerima pengiktirafan satu bintang daripada Michelin Guide iaitu buku panduan antarabangsa bagi hidangan menarik dan menyelerakan. Dimiliki oleh Nani Rahayu Yusof Hughie, bekas wartawan Pertubuhan Berita Nasional Malaysia (Bernama), restoran berkenaan menyajikan hidangan popular masyarakat India Muslim, Melayu dan Cina di Pulau Pinang. Penarafan satu bintang menunjukkan kehebatan sesebuah restoran itu dalam menawarkan hidangan bertaraf tinggi dengan keenakan yang konsisten. "Saya terkejut dan berbesar hati dengan pengiktirafan ini kerana saya bukannya seorang chef profesional, begitu juga dengan pasukan di restoran saya. Malah, saya masih baharu dalam perniagaan ini," kata Nani Rahayu. Menurutnya, pengiktirafan itu diterima pada 23 Disember tahun lalu. Nani Rahayu, 42, yang juga seorang penulis bebas berkata, hidangan-hidangan yang ditawarkan di restoran berkenaan bukan sahaja menampilkan hidangan popular Malaysia tetapi ada antaranya tidak ditawarkan di restoran-restoran Malaysia lain di New York. Dilahirkan dan dibesarkan di Pulau Pinang, Nani Rahayu menubuhkan Mami Penang Cooking Inc., iaitu sebuah syarikat berdaftar yang mengendalikan Mamak Malaysia. Restoran itu merupakan restoran Malaysia pertama yang halal sepenuhnya di New York. Sejak berpindah ke New York pada tahun 2005 kerana mendirikan rumah tangga dengan pakar pemakanan warganegara Amerika Syarikat, Nani Rahayu telah membina dua perniagaan yang berjaya iaitu Masakan Mami PG yang terkenal dengan hidangan nasi lemak dan kandar dan Melayu Cookies yang popular dengan kuih tart nanas dan samperit bunga. Sementara restoran Mamak Malaysia pula terkenal dengan hidangan nasi kandar udang, nasi kandar daging lembu, nasi kandar sotong, bendi goreng dan kambing rendang. UDANG sambal antara menu yang terkenal di Restoran Mamak Malaysia. Banyak cabaran Sejak dibuka pada bulan Mei tahun lalu, restoran itu bukan sahaja mendapat perhatian media massa dan blog-blog makanan tempatan serta liputan akhbar dari Malaysia, malah ia juga menarik kerabat diraja, orang kenamaan dan selebriti. Selain itu, Mamak Malaysia juga memberi perkhidmatan kepada pejabat rangkaian televisyen National Broadcasting Company (NBC), studio Warner Brothers, portal pesanan makanan dalam talian, Seamless dan Tourism Malaysia. Memandangkan perniagaannya semakin berkembang, Nani Rahayu turut mendapat kerjasama daripada Perbadanan Pembangunan Ekonomi Queens untuk membangunkan produk jenama syarikatnya bagi pasaran AS. Namun, katanya perkara ini tidak mudah kerana pihaknya perlu mematuhi prosedur ketat dan undang-undang negara itu dalam memasarkan produk yang terlibat."Membuka restoran juga memerlukan kerja keras, perancangan dan komitmen tinggi. "Keadaannya lebih sukar di luar negara memandangkan pelbagai cabaran dan halangan besar yang perlu saya hadapi. Saya perlu tabah dan bersemangat tinggi untuk melakukannya," kata ibu kepada sepasang anak berusia lima dan tiga tahun ini. Sehubungan itu, beliau menggunakan media sosial seperti Facebook dan Twitter bagi mempromosikan restorannya selain saling berhubung dengan rakan dan pelanggan yang datang ke Mamak Malaysia. Nani Rahayu berkata, kemahiran keusahawanannya disemai sejak remaja dengan menjual mi rebus mamak semasa Hari Kantin di sekolahnya setiap tahun. "Ketika di kolej pula, saya menjual burger. Perniagaan itu kemudian diteruskan oleh adik saya di kampung," kata wanita yang berdarah campuran Punjabi, India Muslim, Belanda, Thailand dan Nyonya ini.
